@ Mike: It depends entirely on the item being pictured and the size of the thumbnail image itself. It's not really a question that can be answered en masse.

Thanks for all the comments! Every once in a while it's interesting to jump in and address some of the apparently basic issues in web development.

I didn't really address tools; although I'd intended to, I just ran out of time.... I hadn't been aware, however, that Fireworks could optimize an image so much more cleanly than Photoshop --- I may have to start using it for that kind of work!

Great article. I love images and image compression is one of the fun things, where you can distort the background and shrink it size wise, but keep all the detail in the front of an image is when you are really doing some good stuff. I don't do real detailed compression very often anymore though.

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Joe for the nice tutorial. I am continually surprised with websites who are using the "width" and "height" attributes to resize the image on the page.

Regarding tools for resizing images: In my own experience, I've discovered many web professionals use Photoshop for image optimization, while Fireworks may offer an alternative method.

I was at a conference recently where the presenter spoke about the new features in Adobe CS3. The feature that drew the most applause was when he demonstrated that Fireworks CS3 could optimize an image with the same detail as Photoshop CS3, but 50% smaller in size than Photoshop CS3.

Nice tutorial Joe. I did explore re-optimizing PNGs a while back that seems to maintain a lossless image with a more reasonable file size.

I agree with your thoughts on thumbnails. I feel it is more artsy to capture a detail to draw the visitor in. Though I'm not sure if this would be suitable for a shop item thumbnail.
