WordPress loses little in terms of design some of the popular CMS, like Joomla, so these plugins are needed. That’s my opinion.

I don’t think it’s a good idea to give every article a completely unique look and feel; but I do think it can be very effective to make changes which allow that article to be best presented as a unique story.
