Teaching Philosophy
The arts are incredibly valuable to me as an individual. Growing up, music and theatrical performances gave me a sense of accomplishment, a sense of involvement, and a great dedication to making beauty. I feel, as a teacher, that educating young people in music is a way of giving them the opportunity to develop their sense of independence and their involvement with the world.
There are many important skills that are developed in the process of learning a musical instrument. Coordination skills, an ability to listen carefully and think about what you hear, and the ability to process complex symbols - the printed music - and translate them as music.
Having studied violin for over 20 years, in addition to years studying vocal performance, piano, conducting and composition, I have a well rounded sense of the nature of music, and take pleasure in communicating my passion for music to students of all ages.
I taught violin and viola at Music and Arts Center in Pittsford, NY until August of 2005, when I relocated to Vienna, Austria. For instrument lessons or lessons in other areas, such as conducting, composition, or music theory, please contact me directly. (Naturally, this will work better if you're also located in Vienna!)
